A fricative is a speech sound you make by pushing air through a small gap, so you hear a soft or buzz — the air is rubbing as it goes through. English has quite a few: /f/ and /v/ (lip on teeth), /s/ and /z/, /ʃ/ and /ʒ/ as in ship and the middle of vision, /θ/ and /ð/ as in think and this (tongue on teeth), and /h/. Teachers and linguists use this word in pronunciation class. It can be a noun (“/f/ is a fricative”) or an adjective (“fricative sounds”). Most people never say it; they just say “the f sound” or “a sound.” It is a classroom and textbook word, not a home word.
