A freesheet is a newspaper you do not pay for. Advertisers (or a city, or a company) pay, so the paper is given out in stations, on the street, or pushed through the door. It is a British-flavoured word; American English more often just says a free newspaper. Though actually, because the money comes from ads, a freesheet can feel light — short news, lots of advertising, easy to throw away on the train. That is not an insult every time; it is how the thing is built. Printers and paper mills use the same spelling in a completely different way: a freesheet (from groundwood-free + sheet) can mean paper made without cheap groundwood pulp, the kind that yellows fast. That is factory English, not the learner-dictionary newspaper. If you meet the word in a UK news story, it almost always means the free paper.
