In British English, Freephone is an arrangement where you ring a company and the company pays for the call, not you. The usual picture is a special number, often beginning 0800. You still have to dial; “free” means the cost of that call, not that someone is giving you a telephone. Though actually, this is a UK-style service word (there was a Freefone 0800 service from 1985), often written with a capital F, like a brand on a poster. Americans more often say a toll-free number. In Taiwan the same kind of idea is an 0800 免付費專線, but people here do not normally call that Freephone. You may also see it used like a verb on signs (“Freephone us on 0800…”), but the thing students need is the arrangement: a number you can ring without paying the call charge, from the country that number belongs to. A Freephone number in Britain is not automatically free from a Taiwan mobile.
