A freemium service lets you start for free, then asks you to pay if you want the better version. The free part is real, but it is often thin: , limits, missing tools, or a slow grind. The paid part is the premium — extra space, no ads, more power, the full game.
It is a business word, not a kitchen-table word. You will meet it with apps, games, and websites. Though actually, many things you already use work this way even when nobody says the label: a free account, then a paid upgrade. It can describe the product (a freemium app) or the plan (their model is freemium).
Companies like it because lots of people try the free layer, and a smaller group pays. Students should hear both halves of the blend: free is the door; premium is the bill.
