Free-to-air television, or a free-to-air programme, is broadcast so that anyone with an ordinary aerial (or the normal digital box) can watch it without paying an extra channel fee. You still need a TV and electricity; “free” here means “not a paid extra service”, not “it costs nothing in life”. It is the opposite of a subscription or channel you buy. News, some sport, and many evening dramas are still free-to-air in countries that kept that public-broadcast habit. It does not mean a YouTube video that happens to be free, and it does not mean cable. In the industry people it to FTA, but do not need that. The are part of the usual spelling when the words sit in front of television or channel.
這個詞用來形容電視或節目。只要有一般天線或數位機上盒，任何人都能收看，不需要另外付頻道費。Free 的意思是不是付費的加值服務，不是完全不花錢，因為還是需要電視和電力。它和訂閱、要付費才能看的加密頻道正好相反。新聞、部分體育比賽，以及很多晚間連續劇，在保有公共廣播傳統的國家仍然是免費收看的。台灣一般說無線電視。
它不是指網路上剛好免費的影片，也不是有線電視。名詞前面加連字號是常見的寫法，例如第一句的 「Free-to-air television」。
組成free（不用另付）+ to + air（送到空中的電波，也就是無線廣播）。三個字用連字號收成一個形容詞。
