A freckle is a small brown spot on the skin, especially on the face, arms, and shoulders. Many people are born with a of them; the sun can make them more numerous and darker in summer, and they often fade a little in winter. They are not dirt, and they are not usually a sign that something is wrong — they are just how some skin shows light. People also use the verb: skin can freckle in the sun, meaning those spots appear or darken. One spot is a freckle; many are freckles. They are different from a mole (usually darker, more raised, and there all year) and from the larger brown marks that come with age.
組成From Middle English freken / frekel, from Old Norse freknur (a plural: freckles). An older English cousin was sprecel. The far-back idea is “to strew, sprinkle”. Scholars also tie that old family to spark, and to dialect words like spry and sprack.
