If something is fragmented, it has been broken into many small separate parts, or it now exists that way. A fragmented society no longer feels like one group. A fragmented market is split into many little pieces. Fragmented notes are arrows and half-sentences, not a full page of thought. Like , news writers often use it with a hint of 'this is a problem' — they wish the thing were whole. Scientists and computer people use it more . It is the -ed form of fragment: the explosion fragmented the glass (verb), a fragmented window (description). Though actually, do not treat it as a twin of fractured. A fractured bone is cracked, and may still be one bone; a fragmented object is in many pieces.
