If something is fragmentary, you do not have a whole — only small separate pieces, and the pieces may not even fit. Fragmentary evidence is a few facts, not a story. Fragmentary remains of a pot are sherds, not the pot. A fragmentary memory is a flash, not the day. The word is a little formal; in easy talk people say incomplete, in pieces, or we only have bits. Though actually, it is not 'made of many parts' in a happy, planned way, like a mosaic. The feeling is: what you have is broken up and not enough. You will see it in history, archaeology, and news when the information is thin.
