In Britain, the FPA is the Family Planning Association: a group that gives free advice about sex, pregnancy, and ways to choose if and when to have a baby. The idea is “planning a family,” not forcing anyone to have one. There is a similar, better-known group in the United States called Planned Parenthood. You will meet FPA mainly in British news, leaflets, and older textbooks; it is an organisation’s name, not a word you use for the idea itself. Though actually, the letters FPA can mean quite different things in other jobs, so the words around it — clinic, advice, contraception — tell you which FPA it is.
