A foxglove is a tall garden plant. Up the stem hang many flowers, each shaped like a little bell — or, if you follow the English name, like a tiny glove. They are often purple-pink, sometimes white or cream. It is a famous cottage plant, and a dangerous one: every part can poison you if you eat it. Doctors also made a heart medicine from it (the old Latin name you may hear is digitalis). So the same plant is both a pretty flower and a serious drug. The English name is already there in Old English as “fox’s glove”; why “fox” is less clear. People tell folk stories about foxes wearing the flowers, but those are stories, not something we can prove.
