A foundry is a place where people melt metal until it is liquid and pour it into hollow shapes (moulds, or molds in American spelling) so it cools into parts for machines, tools, bells, engines. It is heavy-industry language: hot, noisy, skilled work — not a kitchen and not a general factory. Though actually, the found inside foundry is not the past of find, and it is not “found a company” either. It is a different verb found, “to melt and cast metal,” which came in with French fonderie. If you found a school, you start it; if you work in a foundry, you pour metal. Same spelling, different family, and that is the trap almost every student walks into.
