To fossick is to search in a poking-around way — through a drawer, a box, a pile of things — hoping you turn up what you want. You fossick around in the garage for a screwdriver. It is informal, Australian and New Zealand English; people in the US or Britain often do not know it at all, and rummage or hunt around does the same job there. Though actually, the older picture is gold. Miners used to fossick in leftover dirt and abandoned holes, looking for bits of gold other people had missed. That “search the leftovers” feeling is still inside the word when someone fossicks through a market stall or a junk box. It is close to rummage, but fossick sounds more like patient poking than a wild mess.

組成Does not split. Probably from old dialect words for poking about or ferreting something out (fossick, fussick, fussock); further origin uncertain. It may sit near fuss — but that is only a perhaps.
