A forthright person is direct and honest, and we say the word to praise them. They put the point out in front instead of wrapping it in fog. A forthright answer meets the question; a forthright friend will tell you the plan is weak. Though actually forthright is not a licence to be rude. You can be forthright and still gentle; what it names is the straight line, not the sharp edge. It is a reasonably formal adjective, at home in news, job references, and character sketches. There is a rarer noun use for a straight course or a forthright person, but the adjective is the one meet. The picture in the pieces is “straight .”
組成From Old English forþriht, “direct, plain.” By the look of the modern word: forth (out, onward) + right (here “straight,” not “correct”). Middle English forþright / forþriht.
