1. 1

Without a definite shape. Fog can look formless. A blob of clay, before anyone starts to work it, is formless. People also stretch the word to feelings, fears, and early ideas: a formless worry is one you cannot point to yet. It can be literal (a cloud, a mass) or figurative (a plan or a piece of writing with no clear outline). It is a little more than shapeless, which is the everyday twin. Though actually, formless does not mean “without a form to fill in” (like a paper form). It means without a shape you can hold in your mind.
