Formaldehyde is a strong-smelling gas. Mixed with water, it has long been used to keep dead animals and body parts from rotting, so that science students can look at them. That watery mix is often called formalin, and the smell is sharp and stays in your nose. Factories also use it in some glues and wood finishes. Though actually, people worry about it because the gas can make your eyes and throat sting, and with a lot of contact over a long time it is treated as something that can harm health — so labs try not to let it float around freely. It is a chemistry and workshop word, not a kitchen word. You will meet it in science class, in talk about indoor air, and sometimes on product labels.
