Foreknowledge is knowledge that something is going to happen before it actually does. It is a formal word. You meet it when people talk seriously about the future: they left the coast with no foreknowledge of how bad the storm would be. In religion and philosophy, people argue about God’s foreknowledge — whether knowing the future still leaves people free to choose. The point is that the knowing comes first; it is not the same as a lucky guess after the fact. In everyday talk, people are more likely to say I knew in advance or nobody warned us.
