A forecourt is a large open area in front of a building, especially a hotel or a garage. In British English it is a very ordinary word for the paved bit of a petrol station — where the pumps stand and cars pull in. You can also speak of a hotel forecourt, where taxis wait. It is not the garden, and it is not inside; it is the open space you cross before you go in. American English uses the word less; people there might just say the lot, the driveway, or the area out front. Though actually, court here is the old sense of a yard, not a law court and not a tennis court — even though those words are cousins.
組成From fore- (“in front”) + court. Here court is the old word for a yard or open enclosure, from Old French cort.
