In British money news, the Footsie is a friendly nickname for the FTSE 100: the 100 biggest companies on the London stock market, and the number that shows whether those shares went up or down. Presenters say the Footsie closed higher today the way Americans say the Dow. It is informal. In a serious report you will see FTSE 100 written out. People who do not follow shares may never use it. The playful shape of the word is foot plus the friendly ending -sie; people use it because the letters FTSE are said like footsie.
