A folklorist is someone who studies : the stories, songs, and customs of a people. They may go out and record what older people remember, or work in a university and write about how a tale changes from village to village. The ending -ist means “a person who does this kind of work,” the same piece as in artist or scientist. It is a specialist word. In everyday talk someone might just say she studies folk tales.
