A small device or tag, often on a keychain, that you use to open a car door, unlock a building, or start a car without a traditional key - you just hold it near a sensor or press a button. There's also an older meaning: a small pocket for a watch, or the short chain hanging from a pocket watch. The verb 'to fob someone off' means to give someone a weak excuse or a poor substitute to get rid of them without solving their real problem.
