A way of controlling an aircraft in which the pilot's controls are not joined to the wings and tail by cables and rods, but send electrical signals to computers, and the computers move the parts. The pilot asks for a turn; the computer decides exactly how to do it, and will refuse a move that would damage the plane. Nearly all modern work this way — it makes the aircraft lighter and safer. The term is used as a describing word before a noun: 'a fly-by-wire system', 'a fly-by-wire aircraft'. It belongs to aviation and engineering writing, though car makers have borrowed the pattern for 'drive-by-wire' steering and throttles. Note the word is 'wire' even though much of the signal may travel by other means; the name stuck from the early systems.
fly-by-wire 指一種操控飛機的方式。駕駛的操縱裝置不是用鋼索和桿子連到機翼和尾翼，而是把電子訊號送進電腦，再由電腦去移動各個部分。駕駛要求轉彎，電腦就決定怎麼轉；如果某個動作可能傷到飛機，電腦會拒絕執行。現代的客機幾乎都是這樣，因為飛機比較輕，也比較安全。
這個詞放在名詞前面當形容詞用，例如 「a fly-by-wire system」、「a fly-by-wire aircraft」。它屬於航空和工程領域的用語。汽車業也借用了同樣的模式，出現了 drive-by-wire 的說法，指方向盤和油門也改用電子控制。
名字裡還是有 wire（線），雖然很多訊號其實用別的方式傳送。這是因為早期的系統真的用線路，名字就這樣留下來了。
組成fly + by + wire — 'flying by means of wire', that is, the pilot's commands travel as electricity along wires instead of pulling on cables.
