Light given off by a substance after it absorbs energy, like UV light, and then re-releases it as visible light — this is why some markers, clothes, or rocks glow under a "black light." It's different from just being colored: fluorescence means the object is actually giving off its own light in response to another light source.

Coined in 1852 by physicist George Stokes from fluorspar + -escence.
