A flue is the pipe or tube that lets smoke and hot air from a fire, stove, or boiler out of a building. In a house with a fireplace, the flue runs up inside the chimney. If it is blocked, smoke comes back into the room, which is dangerous. People get this word mixed up with flu — the illness — because the two sound the same. They have nothing to do with each other. The old history of the word is not settled: it may come from a Middle English word for flowing, or it may be a changed form of an old word for a pipe, related to flute. Nobody is sure, so it is better not to pick a favourite.

A pipe or duct that carries gaseous combustion products away from the point of combustion (such as a furnace).
- It has frequently been a subject of inquiry, whether the ancients were acquainted with chimneys, or open fire-places. In the houses discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii, there are no chimneys; they all appear to have been warmed by furnaces and flues.
