Flodden is a hillside in Northumberland, in the north of England, near the Scottish border. In 1513 a great battle was fought there, often called the Battle of Flodden or Flodden Field. The Scottish army came south under their king, James IV. The English met them on this hill. The Scots lost very badly, and the king was killed. For Scotland it is one of the darkest days in their story; thousands of men died, including many lords. English history remembers it as a famous win. The name is a place, not a person: you say at Flodden the way you say at Waterloo. People also say Flodden when they mean the battle, not the hill itself. You will meet it in history books and poems, not in everyday talk.
