Advertisements love this word, so it can sound a little shiny, as if the thing were too perfect to be real. In careful talk it still just means “without a flaw.” Though actually, people use it loosely — “flawless” makeup on a phone screen may only mean “looks really good,” not that nothing at all is wrong if you look close.

It works for surfaces (no marks), for work (no mistakes), and for things that feel complete (not lacking). It is a compliment, and a strong one. For a school test, teachers more often say perfect or without mistakes; flawless is the word you hear for skin, gems, dancing, and big public performances.
