Flatulence is the rather careful, almost medical name for having too much gas in the stomach or the gut — the kind that makes you feel swollen, or that leaves the body as wind. Doctors and careful writers use this word. In ordinary talk people say gas (especially in American English) or wind (especially in British English), or they just do not name it. It is not a rude word, but it is not a warm one either; it keeps a polite distance from a body fact everyone knows. Though actually, everyone has some gas; flatulence usually means it is noticeable or uncomfortable.
