A flatfish is a sea fish whose body is thin and wide, as if it has been pressed. Plaice, sole, flounder, halibut, and turbot are this kind of fish. When the fish is grown, both eyes sit on the same side of the head, and it lies on the sand or mud. People eat many of them; you meet the word at the fish counter more than in daily chat. Though actually, if a list names cod next to plaice, that is a slip: cod is not a flatfish. Cod has a thick, round body and an eye on each side. The tidy pair “cod or plaice” is tidier than the sea.
