Flannelette is a soft cotton cloth that feels warm and a little fuzzy, like flannel, and people use it for pyjamas, nightdresses, and winter sheets. The ending -ette is a hint: it is cotton made to copy flannel. Real flannel was often wool; flannelette is cotton, so it is cheaper and easier to wash, though the fuzzy surface can pill, and old brushed cloth can catch fire more readily than you might think. Shops and grandparents use the word; younger people may just say soft cotton, or use other names for other warm fabrics. If you see it on a packet of sheets, think: warm, fuzzy cotton for bed, not wool.
