Flanking comes from military language: a flanking attack or flanking maneuver means moving around to the side of an enemy to attack from the side, instead of head-on, which is often a surprise and harder to defend against. In everyday, non-military use, 'flanking' just describes things placed on either side of something, like two trees flanking a doorway.
