A flange is a flat rim that sticks out from the edge of a pipe, a wheel, or another solid thing. On a train wheel, the flange is the extra lip that hangs down inside the rail and stops the wheel sliding off. On , two flanges can be bolted together to join the in a strong, tidy way. It is a workshop and engineering word, not a sitting-room word. The shape is the point: a standing-out edge that holds something in place or makes a joint stronger.
