Flagellation is the act of whipping someone, or yourself, with a whip. Though actually, it is not the word for a street fight or a slap. It names a planned, often ceremonial beating, and the famous use is religious: in some older Christian practice, people whipped their own backs to show they were sorry for their sins, or to fight the body's wants. That is self-flagellation. You will also hear self-flagellation used more loosely, almost as a joke, for a person who keeps blaming themselves with words, no whip at all — "stop the self-flagellation" means stop being so hard on yourself. The physical, religious sense is the stricter one; the "beating yourself up" sense is how people stretch it. It is a formal, noun. Everyday English just says whipping.
