A fixer-upper is a house you buy or sell cheap because it needs work — a tired roof, old wires, ugly walls. People who can repair things see a bargain; other people see a headache. It is informal American talk, common when people discuss homes. Though actually, the word is the house, not the handy person. The playful double -er comes from fix up, “to repair and make nice.” You buy a fixer-upper; then you fix it up. Sometimes people stretch it to a cheap old car that needs the same kind of care.
