A five-and-ten was an American shop that sold many kinds of cheap goods, especially for the house: soap, thread, cups, small tools, toys. The name comes from a time when a lot of those things cost five cents or ten cents. People also called it a five-and-dime or a dime store. You will meet the word in older books and films more than on a street today; the shops changed, and prices did too. Though actually the feeling is a shop full of small, inexpensive household things — but it is an old American idea, not a shop type Taiwan names this way.
