A five-and-ten was an American shop that sold many kinds of cheap goods, especially for the house: soap, thread, cups, small tools, toys. The name comes from a time when a lot of those things cost five cents or ten cents. People also called it a five-and-dime or a dime store. You will meet the word in older books and films more than on a street today; the shops changed, and prices did too. Though actually the feeling is a shop full of small, inexpensive household things — but it is an old American idea, not a shop type Taiwan names this way.
five-and-ten 是美國舊式的廉價雜貨店，賣很多便宜的日用品，像肥皂、線、杯子、小工具和玩具。名字來自很多東西只要五分或十分錢的年代，也有人叫它 dime store。現在這類店比較少見，多半是在老書和老電影裡遇到。它是美國的舊概念，台灣沒有這樣的叫法，比較接近早期的雜貨店或十元商店。
