    Firebombing is attacking a place with firebombs — bombs made to start , not just to blow a hole in a wall. The bomb spreads burning stuff that keeps burning, so buildings, trees, or a whole street catch fire. You will meet this word most in history, when planes dropped firebombs on a city in war, and in the news when someone throws a firebomb at a shop or an office. A firebomb is the bomb; firebombing is the attack. It is a heavy, ugly word. It is not a small accident with a match, and it is not bombing in general: the fire is the point.

組成fire + bomb + -ing (the act). A firebomb is a bomb meant to start fire; firebombing is the doing of that.
