組成It does not split. From Middle English firre, from Old English fyrh / furh (as in furhwudu, “pine-wood”), from an old Germanic tree-name (German still has Föhre for a kind of pine). Scholars trace it further back to a very old word for oak — tree names often drift from one tree to another. In Middle English it may also have mixed with a similar Old Norse word for pine-wood.
