Fingerprinting is the practice, not the little mark. It means taking a record of people’s and then using that record to try to find out who touched something — a window, a gun, a cup — or who a person is. Police do this after a crime. Some countries also do it at the airport, or when you apply for an ID card. The mark itself is a ; fingerprinting is the system and the act of collecting and matching those marks. It can sound quite official (news, court, immigration). In everyday talk people still say it in a plain way: “They are fingerprinting everyone who was in the building.”
