A fingermark is a dirty or greasy print left by a finger on something clean — a window, a phone screen, a white wall, a shiny table. As a verb, to fingermark something is to leave those marks on it. It is more British than American; in the US people more often say smudge, or they say even when they only mean a messy mark, not the unique pattern police use. Though actually, this is a quieter, less common word than , and many never meet it. If the glass is just smeared and nobody is talking about identity, fingermark is the closer word.
