In music, fingering is which fingers you use, and in what order, to play a piece. Teachers write little numbers on the notes to show the fingering, and a “better fingering” just means an easier or cleaner way to play the same bit. On the piano, 1 is the thumb and 5 is the little finger; on the violin, 1 is the first finger, not the thumb — though actually, that mix-up is very common. The word can also mean handling something with your fingers. There is an adult sexual meaning too, which you may see online: using the fingers on someone’s sex parts. Same spelling, very different rooms. If the talk is piano or guitar, people hear the music sense unless the rest of the sentence points the other way.
