FIDE is the organisation that runs international chess for the whole world. It was founded in 1924. When people talk about the official world champion, a player’s rating, or the rules of a serious tournament, they are talking about FIDE’s system. You usually say it as one word, roughly “FEE-day,” though some people spell out the letters. It is a name, not a common noun — you cannot have “a fide.” Though actually, chess people treat it a bit like a brand: FIDE rating, FIDE tournament, FIDE rules. It does not run 象棋. It runs the game with king, queen, bishops and the rest — the one students call 西洋棋.
組成Borrowed from French FIDE, short for Fédération Internationale des Échecs, “International Chess Federation.”
