If someone or something is in fine fettle, or in good fettle, they are healthy, cheerful, and working as they should. We almost always meet fettle inside that little phrase; by itself it means the condition or shape something is in. It has a slightly old-fashioned, British, ring — the kind of thing a or a sports writer might say after a rest: “She’s in fine fettle again.” A machine can be in fine fettle too, not only a person. In some northern English speech, to fettle something is to it or get it ready, but will rarely need that verb.

組成From Middle English fetlen, “to prepare, put in place, shape.” Scholars are not sure of the next step: possibly Old English fetel, a belt or girdle, or possibly from the old verb meaning “to fetch.” Further origin uncertain.
