The fetlock is the joint at the back of a horse’s leg, just above the hoof — the bit that looks a little like an ankle, often with a of long hair hanging down. Riders and vets talk about it all the time (a swollen fetlock, a fetlock injury). If you do not spend time around horses, you may only meet it in a story. It is a body-part word, not a verb, and not a lock of hair on a person’s head.

組成From Middle English. People have long taken it as foot + lock (“a tuft of hair”), which fits the tuft on the joint — but it is actually a misdivision of an old ending -oc. There are cousin words in Dutch and German.
