Fervid is a close cousin of fervent, but the usual shade is that the feeling is too strong. A fervid speech may sound over-the-top. A fervid fan may leave no room for doubt, or for anyone else to talk. It is a word: you will read it more than you will hear it at the shops. If fervent is a sincere fire, fervid is that fire burning a bit too bright. Though actually, not every writer draws the line this sharply; some use the two words almost the same way. If you need one word for ordinary English, fervent is the one people know. Keep fervid for writing, and for the times you want a hint of “this is a lot.”
