A ferrule is a small cap or ring, usually metal or rubber, put on the end of a stick, cane, umbrella, or tool to make that end stronger and to stop it splitting. You have probably held one without knowing the name: the little metal band that holds the on a pencil is a ferrule. Walking sticks, tent , and fishing rods often have them too. It is a quiet, practical word — hardware shops and craftspeople use it more than everyday chat. Though actually, the spelling is a bit of a trick. It looks as if iron (Latin ferrum) is in the word, and people later wrote it that way; the older word came from a little bracelet, a small ring you slide onto something. There is also a verb, to ferrule something, meaning to fit that cap on, but the noun is the sense you will meet.

組成The older word came from Old French virole, from Latin viriola, a little bracelet. English later changed the spelling under the influence of Latin ferrum (iron), so it looks like an iron word even though it started as a small ring.
