Fermanagh is in the southwest of Northern Ireland. It used to be one of the old counties; today it is a local government district (often joined in the name with as Fermanagh and ). People still say “County Fermanagh” the old way, and that does not sound wrong. It is known for lakes, especially Lough Erne. You meet the name in news, maps, and travel English. Though actually, the spoken shape surprises : the stress sits in the middle, roughly fur-MAN-uh, not fer-man-AG-uh. It is in Northern Ireland, not in the Republic of Ireland, even though it sits on that western side of the island.
