Femoral is the doctor’s word for things that belong to the thigh — above all to the thigh bone. The femoral artery is the big blood vessel in the thigh; the femoral nerve lives there too; a femoral fracture is a break of that bone. Though actually, femoral is almost always an adjective, not the name of the bone itself. The bone is the femur. Word lists sometimes squash the two together (“femoral = the thigh bone”), which is close enough for a picture, but in a hospital you will hear femoral in front of another word: femoral pulse, femoral canal, femoral hernia. It is formal and medical. You will not hear it in a café, unless someone has just come from A&E.
