A fedora is a soft hat, usually felt, with a brim that curls up a little and a crease down the middle of the top. Think of old films: city men, jazz players, detectives in the rain. It is not a hard and not a cowboy hat — the brim is softer, and that dent in the top is part of the look. The hat took its name from a nineteenth-century play called Fédora; the woman in it wore one, and the style caught on. For a long time it was just a smart everyday hat. Later some people wore it as a fashion choice, and for a while the internet also used “fedora” with a teasing smile, because a certain kind of young man wore one with a lot of attitude. The hat itself is still only a hat.
組成Named after the play Fédora. The heroine, Fédora Romazov, wore this kind of hat. The name Fédora is the Russian feminine of Fyodor, from Greek Theódōros, “gift of god” (theós “god” + dôron “gift”).
