A federalist is someone who supports federalism — a system of government where power is divided between one central (national) government and several smaller state or regional governments, each with its own powers. In United States history, 'the Federalists' were a specific political group in the 1790s who wanted a strong central government; that's why you'll often see this word capitalized in history books about early America.
