A fearsome thing makes people afraid. It looks or feels dangerous, strong, or hard to face: a fearsome storm, a fearsome animal, a fearsome teacher. The word is a little strong and a little old-fashioned; in everyday talk many people just say scary. One careful point: fearsome is about the thing that causes fear. The person who feels fear is fearful, not fearsome. A fearsome dog scares you. A fearful child is the one who is scared.
