In British English, FE is further education: learning after school that is not university. FE colleges teach things like A-levels, job skills, , English for adults, and evening classes. Higher education (HE) is university; FE is the other path, and also a way back in for people who left school years ago. You see it in “FE college,” “the FE sector,” “an FE teacher.” It is British education-speak, a little insider, and not how American English names this. “Further” here means “beyond school,” not “more far.” Though actually the letters FE stand for many other things in other rooms — so the meaning is this British school meaning only when the talk is about colleges and courses. It is written in capitals as an abbreviation; in careful writing people often spell out further education the first time.
