The FCC is a US government body. The letters stand for Federal Communications Commission. They make and enforce rules for radio, television, phones, cable, and a lot of the internet that travels over US airwaves and wires. If a US TV station needs a licence, or a phone company wants to buy another phone company, or someone argues that a broadcast was too rude for the afternoon, that is FCC territory. They do not catch street criminals — that is police or the FBI — and they do not watch food and medicine — that is the FDA. For a student in Taiwan, the closest home idea is the NCC, Taiwan’s National Communications Commission, which looks after TV, radio, and telecoms here. The FCC is the American one. You will hear the name in news about US internet rules, fights over what networks must carry, and fines against broadcasters or phone companies.
